FIRE - The splendid new residence of Mr. Chas. Crittenden, of Ruggles township, was totally destroyed by fire, on the night of Wednesday, the 15th inst.  It was one of the handsomest farm houses in this county, 46 by 76 feet size, two story in height, with hip-roof covered with slate.  It was built during the past season by Mr. McNeally, one of the finest architects of this portion of the State, at a cost of $4,000, and was not quite finished when destroyed.  It was the design of the builder and owner that the house should surpass all others in the county in point of size and the elegance of its appointments, as it certainly did.   For particulars of its loss we are indebted to Mr. Geo. M. Gustin.  About half-past ten o'clock on Wednesday night a servant girl first discovered the fire, and at once awoke the carpenters, who were sleeping upon the premises.  The only pump upon the place being frozen fast, snow was used to quench the flame, and for a time seemed to effect the purpose.  The fire soon passed beyond control, however, and the efforts of those present were directed to saving such portions of the building as were moveable.  The doors, windows, furniture, etc., were taken out, and the remainder of the structure permitted to burn.  An insurance policy for $2,500 in the Ashland County Partron's Mutual Co., reduces the loss to about $1,000.  It is Mr. Crittenden's intention to rebuild next spring, using the same foundation, which is not materially injured.
