A.L. Curtis was a native of the state of New York, born in 1819.  Came to Ohio when young;  read law in Medina, and, on the formation of the new county of Ashland, came to the village of Ashland, and was the deputy of L.O. Jennings, the first clerk of the county.  He was elected and re-elected Probate Judge of the county.  Twice he was chosen mayor of the village, and in all the relations of life was a most useful and highly respected men.  He was a good, safe counselor, more of an advocate than his friend, John H. McComb, but neither he nor McComb were gifted as orators.  He lived long and when he died on June 10th., of the year of grace, 1894, he was the nestor of the Ashland bar.  Surviving him are two sons and two daughters, all of whom, save one son who lives in Akron, Ohio, are residents of Ashland.
