... John H. McComb, born in
Western Pennsylvania in the year 1813; educated at Franklin College,
Harrison County, Ohio, graduating in the class of 1839. He came to
Ashland in 1843. His life was long prolonged, for he died in 1886,
beloved by all who knew him. A careful, prudent man. His wife I
knew and still know well -- an excellent woman, worthy such a husband.
One son and two daughters represent his name. Politically, a
Republican, serving neither to the right nor to the left, yet trusted by men
of all parties and of all shades of political faith. He was not an
advocate in the ordinary sense, but a good counselor and save and among the
farmers of the county and by them he was held in the highest esteem.
When he addressed the court or the jury, with his words went always a
conviction that they were true words and were entitled to the most careful
consideration. A quiet man, he did not seek the favor of the multitude
and was not ambitious for official place or station. Yet the
multitude, the great body of citizens, greatly respected, admired and loved
this man of few words and much work.
