The First Presbyterian Church of Ashland was organized by the Presbytery of Richland, on the 29th. day of July, 1841, with a membership of 43.
Its first church building was a stone structure, 43 by 55 feet, erected in 1842 and enlarged in 1851 by adding 12½ feet to the north end, and in 1858 by adding 18 feet on the south end.
It was served by the following ministers, or supplied for a time: Rev. James Rowland, Rev. Robert Fulton, Rev. Samuel Fulton, Rev. Joseph Gordon and Rev. Simeon Peck, as pastor; Rev. John Robinson, who began labor on the first Sabbath of February, 1844, was installed as pastor on the 21st. day of June, 1844, and remains in that position to-day.
Its Elders have been Joseph Wasson, Thomas Smith, Samuel Fulton, Samuel McLain, James Milligan, Bela. B. Clark, John McLain, Geo. Miller, Robert Nelson, David Sloan, Sr., Wm. S. Allen, Wm. R. White, David Sloan, Jr., C.C. Wick, J.W. Smith, Edward T. Drayton, Wm. Sloan, P.Q. Stoner, J.C. Sloan, William J. Holt and A.M. Currier. Of these, B.B. Clark, Samuel Fulton, Robert Nelson and John McClain, died in its service.
Its Deacons have been Wm. Wasson, Jacob Mykrantz, Samuel Smith, Jas. S. Mason, Benjamin Shearer, Jacob Richards, T.C. Bushnell, Peter Risser, Wm. Doty, J.O. Jennings, Gilbert Miller, A.H. Myers, James McG. Patterson, R.D. Freer, E.W. Wallack, S.W. Beer, Edward Briggs and H.J. Cressinger.
Its Sabbath School Superintendents have been Joseph Wasson, William Wasson, Wm. Osborn, J.W. Smith, H.J. Cressinger, T.C. Bushnell, E.T. Drayton, Peter Risser and C.S. Martindale.
Its Ladies' Missionary Society has had the following Presidents: Mrs. Cornelia Wasson, Mrs. Mary W. Robinson, Mrs. Maria L. Beer, Mrs. Emma Cressinger and Mrs. Fanny Damp.
There have been connected with it 1007 members, an average increase per annum of 24-2/3. Its present membership numbers 284. Its Sabbath School numbers 250. Its Pastor is Rev. John Robinson, D.D. Its Elders are Joseph Wasson, Thomas Smith, George Miller, E.T. Drayton, P.Q. Stoner, J.C. Sloan, W.J. Holt and A.M. Currier. Its Deacons are J.O. Jennings, R.D. Freer, E.W. Wallack, S.W. Beer, Edward Briggs and H.J. Cressinger.
Its Sabbath School officers are: Superintendent, E.T. Drayton Assist. Superintendent, S.W. Beer Secretary, Miss Emma Kellogg; Treasurer, Miss Lizzie Beer Librarians, Messrs. Frank and Lorin Miller.
The President of its Ladies' Missionary Society is Mrs. John Damp.
The Committee who have in charge the erection of the present building consists of J.O. Jennings, R.D. Freer, S.W. Beer, Joseph Wasson, T.M. Beer and Philip Shearer. Architect, George Kramer.
