ASHLAND

  • Ashland Press

    • Formerly the States and Union, until August, 1872, when B.F. Nelson and W.H. Gates purchased the paper and changed the name to the Ashland Press

    • In July of 1879, the paper was sold to William T. Alberson and William G. Heltman, the latter selling his interest to the former several years later

    • W.H. Gates re-purchased an interest in the paper on January 1, 1892, and later became the sole owner in January, 1895

    • The Ashland Press Company was formed on April 4, 1899

    • Its' offices were moved into the Krichbaum Bldg. on Orange Street in 1913.

    • In 1915, the editors of the paper were the Hon. Arthur P. Black, of Washington, D.C. (as of March, 1902), and William A. Duff (as of January, 1913).  J.B. Blue was an assistant editor.

  • Ashland Union

    • Formerly known as the Ohio Union, the name was changed to the Ashland Union when purchased by Collins W. Bushnell in November, 1855

    • Dr. George W. Hill became the owner in 1868 after several changes in ownership, and the name was changed to the States and Union.

  • Daily News

    • Started on Sept. 10, 1892

  • Democrat

    • First issue publishedin 1846, run by H.S. Knapp

    • Merged with the Ashland Standard in 1848 to become the Ohio Union

    • Merged with the Ashland Times in 1903

  • Herald

    • OHS: 3/24/1835 -- 7/26/1835

  • Ohio Globe

    • Established in Ashland by Joshua H. Ruth, 1835

  • Ohio Union

    • Established in 1848 as a merger between the Ashland Standard and the Ashland Democrat

    • In November, 1855, it was purchased by Collins W. Bushnell, and the name was changed to the Ashland Union

    • OHS: 5/26/1852 -- 6/16/1852 and 5/25/1853 -- 5/24/1854

  • Standard

    • Established in 1846 by R.V. Kennedy

    • Merged with the Ashland Democrat in 1848 to become the Ohio Union

  • States & Union

    • Formerly known as the Ashland Union until Dr. George W. Hill became the owner in 1868 the name was changed to the States and Union.

  • Sun

  • The Gospel Preacher

    • Started by the Dunkards of Ashland, ca. 1879 [source: Hayesville Journal: 02 January 1879]

  • Times

    • Merged with the Ashland Gazette in 1903

  • Times-Gazette

    • A merger between the Ashland Gazette and the Ashland Times in 1903.

    • In 1915, the editor was George Hildebrand who at that time had been with the paper for 37 years. The City Editor was Charles L. Bowman, and Miss Patience I. Ilger was Editor of the Woman's Dept.

    • Republican Paper; Established in 1853

    • Published by the Times-Gazette offices

    • Some of the editors of the paper were: Judge Osborn, followed by L.J. Sprengle, Dr. Joseph E. Stubbs*, William G. Stubbs and W.H. Reynolds

  • Western Phoenix

    • First Whig paper in Ashland. Started in 1836.

  • The Dem

HAYESVILLE

  • Journal

    • In 1879 the paper was published weekly by J.W. Brant, with F.H. Smith as Editor.

    • Williard S. Long, one of the former editors of the paper, left Ohio in 1883 to take charge of the Palatka Herald in Florida. [source: Hayesville Journal: 04 January 1883, Vol. 8, No. 27]

    • J.W. Brant left the paper in July of 1886 and was replaced by E.D. Brant. [source: Hayesville Journal: 29 July 1886, Vol. 12, No. 4]

  • Advocate
