[Ashland Times Gazette, October 6, 1975, pg. 2] Harley, John Preston -- John Preston Harley, a well-known Ashland pharmacist, who has many friends in this city [Mansfield], died very suddenly Friday. His death resulted from his excesses having undermined his health. He was educated in pharmacy at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. For many years he owned a drug store in Ashland and accumulated some property. He had acquired the drink habit, however, and though efforts were made to reform him, it did not avail and for the past few years he was well nigh penniless, as he spent everything for drink. A few weeks ago arrangements were made to remove him to the county infirmary, but the plans were changed and he had been staying at the county jail. It is likely, if he had lived, he would have been sent to the Keeley cure again as some of his friends were arranging to raise money for him to take the treatment. He was about 48 years of age and was unmarried. He leaves three sisters. Submitted by Amy. Mrs. Hilterbrant, whose maiden name was Kore, was born near Harrisburg, Pa., May 24, 1798. At the age of six years, she with her parents removed to York County, same state. In the year 1816 she was united in marriage with Peter Hilterbrant, with whom she lived about 49 years. She remained in York County about 28 years. About the year 1839, she with her husband and children immigrated to Ohio, and settled in Wooster, and one year later removed to Vermillion Twp., then Richland, now Ashland County, where she lived in the same neighborhood ever since, except one year that they lived near New Pittsburg, being a period of about 40 years. She was the mother of twelve children, six boys and six girls, all of whom arrived at mature age and married, but one. The names and residence of those living are Polly, married a man by the name of Kraut, and lives near Three Rivers, Mich.; Mary married Henry Bostorf; Catharine married a man by the name of Frantz and lives in Illinois; Isaac lives in LaGrange County, Indiana; Moses lives in DeKalb County, Indiana; Ephraim lives on the old homestead where his parents lived and died; Julia Ann married William Snyder and lives in LaGrange County, Indiana; Benjamin died 13 years ago; Henry, also deceased; Louisa married A.J. Coe and lives in Montgomery Twp., this county; Sarah married S.D. Andress and lives in Vermillion Twp., this county; William died at the age of 6 years. She lived with her husband about 49 years -- he died in 1865. At the age of 17, she united with the Lutheran church, in which she lived in communion and fellowship until her death, being about 64 years -- and died full of hope of a blessed immortality beyond the grave. Her sufferings for a few days prior to her final departure, were intense, but she bore them with Christian fortitude, perfectly resigned to the will of the Divine Master, and patiently awaiting his summons to call her home. Thus, another veteran in the army of life, has laid by her armor and gone to enjoy that blessed life of peace which is promised to those who have fought the good fight and gained the victory. Her remains were followed to their last resting place, in Eckley's Cemetery by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Helfrich, Pastor of the Pres. Church at Hayesville, and a very appropriate sermon was preached from the text selected by the deceased, which is found in Rev. 14th. chap., and 13th. verse. A lantern was procured and the men recognized the body as that of Samuel Hoover, a prominent farmer residing four miles west of Ashland. J.N. Pluck, the liveryman of this city, was driving home from Ashland and stopped at the scene of the fatality and saw the body fof the unfortunate man. It is believed the horses became frightened and ran away, over-turning the wagon. Mr. Hoover's head was mashed and no doubt he had been killed instantly. His home is three miles south of Loudonville and he lived alone except when he had some men working for him. His saw mill was located on the banks of the Clearfork and this morning his horses were found in their stable with the water so high in it that they had to keep their heads up in order to keep from drowning. The animals were removed from the stable and efforts were made to find Mr. Hunter. The car in which he lived was missing, and it is supposed that Mr. Hunter was swept down the stream in the car and drowned. Up to 11 o’clock today he had not been found. He is about 65 years of age.
