Jackson, Jacob-- Jacob Jackson Departs This Life at Home of Councilman Kunkel Friday Afternoon – Funeral Sunday. Jacob Jackson, one of Ashland’s oldest and respected citizen, died Friday afternoon at about 3 o’clock at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Councilman and Mrs. Christian Kunkel, on Cleveland Avenue. Deceased had reached the ripe old age of 87 years, and had long been a resident of this city, moving here from the country east of town. Only one daughter survives, Mrs. Kunkel. Jacobs, Esq., editor of the Ashland States and Union, died recently. We spent a pleasant hour with his estimable family during the fall. They have our heartfelt sympathy. [Shelby (OH) Independent News: 01 February 1872, Vol. 4, No. 14] Jackson, Laura Opal (Lloyd) -- Laura Opal (Lloyd) Jackson, 70, of 1002 Myers Ave., died unexpectedly early Friday morning, September 12, 1980 at Samaritan Hospital. She was the daughter of Harvey and Hallie Moyers Lloyd. She was born July 28, 1910 in Exchange, W. V. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of the Ashland area for the past 46 years.She was married December 5, 1932, to Paul Jackson who survives. Also surviving is one sister, Eva Gump of Ashland, Ohio. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at HeylFuneral Home, with the Rev. Carl Cawood officiating. Burial will be in the Nankin Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Submitted by Margie. [unknown paper: unknown date] Jackson, Lucy – Death and Burial of Mrs. Jacob Jackson. Death came suddenly to Mrs. Jacob Jackson formerly Luch Hostler – Wednesday night of last week at her home east of town. Her husband and little daughter, Helen, survive her. Eleven years ago, during the meetings which Rev. and Mrs. E I. Housley and the evangelist, Miss Edna Baning, held here, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were converted and joined the Methodist church. Mrs. Jackson, when her health permitted, was a faithful attendants at Sunday school and church services. Funeral services Saturday afternoon were held in the Methodist conducted by Rev. Miller. Interment in the Jeromville cemetery. Neighbors and friends most kindly assisted every way possible after the death of Mrs. Jackson and many very beautiful floral offerings of sympathy were sent to the husband and little daughter for which they expressed their appreciation and tenderest thanks. [Shelby (OH) Independent News: 01 February 1872, Vol. 4, No. 14] Jacobs, Brooks A. - 73, New London died at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital in Norwalk Sunday following a brief illness. A native of Rolling Prarie, Ind. Mr Jacobs had been a resident of the Norwalk- Wakeman-Greenwich areas. A former employee of Republic Steel in Elyria, he had retired in 1966. He was a charter member of the Lions Club in Birmingham, and had served with the 112th Observation Squadron during World War 2. Survivors include one son, John A Jacobs of Clarksfield, one daughter, Mrs. Alan(Judith) Kestner of Polk, two grandchildren, one sister, Mrs Marie Miller of Wooster, neices and nephews. Preceeding him in death was his wife Laura in April, 1975. Services will be Thursday at Kubach-Smith Funeral Home, 314 East Main, Norwalk, at 11 a.m. with the Rev.James V Moser of the Polk United Methodist Church officiating. Jarvis, Ella V. - DIED -- At the residence of her parents on South Street, Hayesville, Monday, September 29th., 1879, Ella V. Jarvis, aged 22 years, 5 months and 16 days. The deceased was the eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Jarvis. For the last year of her life she has been a sufferer from that dread disease consumption, and has been confined to the house most of the time; suffering, yet never complaining, being always hopeful and in anticipation of a bright future. HAYESVILLE JOURNAL: 02 October 1879, Vol. 5, No. 14 Submitted by Amy Jarvis, William Hayesville -- Man, 89, Dies In Fall At Home -- William Jarvis , 89, retired proprietor of a Hayesville food store, was found dead here yesterday afternoon at the bottom of a flight of stairs in the home. Ashland County Corner G. D. Fredise ruled Mr. Jarvis died of a fractured skull in the fall. He said the Hayesville man evident suffered a fracture of the right hip, then toppling down the stairs. Mr. Jarvis had been dead 12 hours when he was found by neighbor Dr. Fredise said. A resident of Hayesville for 75 years. Mr. Jarvis was born Dec. 25 in 1865 in Ohio. Survivors are three nephew, Edmond Stover of Hayesville, Terry? McKinley of Hayesville and Monroe McKinley of Albuquerque , New Mexico. Submitted by Marge. [Mansfield News Journal: 19 February 1954] Jeffers, Lotta – Mrs. Lotta Jeffers, Former Resident, Dies On Friday. Martha and Susie Swineford E. Liberty St. have received word of the death of their cousin, Mrs. Lotta Morr Jeffers, a former Ashlander, who died at her home in Santa Monica, Cal. Friday, following a brief illness. Mrs. Jeffers was born in Ashland Dec. 8, 1877 and was married to Allan Jeffers Oct. 21, 1903 in Kansas City. He preceded her in death. A son, Merrick and three daughters – Mrs. Ruth Stanley, Mrs. Clara Chase, and Mrs. Gertrude Eustace survive her. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Santa Monica. Other cousins in Ashland besides the Swineford sisters are Mrs. Harry Horn, Mrs. Thomas Dexter and Edgar gates, whom she visited last February. Submitted by: klynn [Times-Gazette: Monday, July 25, 1955 pg 12] Johnson, Mary Edith – DIED -- In Ashland, October 28, 1879, Mary Edith, daughter of Harry and Catharine Johnson, aged 9 years, 6 months and 26 days. Her disease was diptheria, with which she suffered patiently for one week, when death relieved her from pain. Mary Edith was an amiable daughter, kind and obedient, and loved by all who knew her. This is a sore bereavement to the parents, but their loss is her eternal gain. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church, in Orange, by Rev. Roseberry, assisted by Rev. J.O. Johnston, Perrysville, died in that place last week after a long and protracted illness.HAYESVILLE JOURNAL: 03 May 1883, Vol. 8, No. 45 Submitted by Amy Johnson, Rebecca - Mrs. Rebecca Johnson burned to death Tuesday at her home in Ashland. She was almost 85 years old. Her clothing caught fire either by a spark from the stove or by a coal from her pipe as she had been smoking a short time before. Her clothing was in flames before she knew it. She ran out of the house and screamed for help and then crawled back into the house. When found her body was burned to a crisp and in places the flesh sloughed off. She suffered intense pain and agony until her death a few hours later. She was the mother of B.F. Johnson, of this city [Mansfield]. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon. Submitted by Amy. [Richland Shield & Banner: 09 February 1895, Vol. LXXVII, No. 39] Johnston, Commodore W. - Commodore W. Johnston, Jr., 77, of 3893 Tugend Rd, Butler, died unexpectedly Monday, March 16 at his home. He was born on Oct. 20, 1920 in North Kenova, Ohio, the son of Commodore W. and Lulu (Smith) Johnston. Mr. Johnston retired from the Navy after 28 years of service, attaining the rank of Chief E. He first enlisted in the U.S. Marines during WWII, when he received a Purple Heart, and then transferred into the Navy, serving in both the Korean Conflict and the War in Vietnam. He was a member of the Perrysville VFW Post 8586, Loudonville American Legion Post 257, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2275; Hayesville AMVETS, and 40 et 8. He is survived by his fiance, Lola Taylor of rural Butler and an aunt, Murley Gibson of South Point, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his son, Commodore Walker Johnston III, in 1997. Military funeral services were conducted Thursday in the Byerly-Lindsey Funeral Home in Loudonville by the American Legion and VFW. Calling hurs were prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to the Commodore W. Johnston, Jr., Memorial Fund. Submitted by Linda and Shirley--typed by Dina--[there is no name or date for this paper but several ads for Ludonville are close by and it is possibly the Loudonville Times and possibly March 1998] Jones, Joseph Sr. - Joseph Jones, Sr., one of the old pioneers of the Black Fork, died on the 13th. inst HAYESVILLE JOURNAL: 24 May 1883, Vol. 8, No. 48 Submitted by Amy Jones, Harry -- Harry Jones, Lucas Man, Dies Today OF Traffic Injuries. Harry Jones, 62, RD 1, Lucas, who was injured in an accident near Perrysville Nov 27 died a little after midnight, Thursday at the Mansfield General Hospital. Jones was pinned in the wreckage of his car which had crashed into bridge pilings, west of rt 39, for about 15 minutes before help came. He suffered a leg fracture and multiple lacerations. Mr. Jones was born June 18, 1892 in Perrysville. He leaves a wife, Hattie Henry Jones, son, and two daughters and four grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Byerly Funeral home in Lucas. The Rev. George Shrack, of St. Johns Lutheran church of Perrysville, will officiate. The burial will take place at Mt. Zion cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral Friday afternoon. Submitted by klynn. [Ashland Times Gazette: 10 December 1954] Jones, Osborn -- Monday. The remains of a young man named Osborn Jones were found lying on the P.F. side-track at Perrysville Saturday night and it is believed that he was killed by freight No. 78, which had sidetracked there about 10 o'clock. Jones was about 21 years old and lived with his parents about two miles west of the village. Submittedby Amy. [Richland Shield & Banner (Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio): 05 October 1889, Vol. LXXII, No. 20] Jones, William - One of the pioneer residents of Ashland County, was born in Southern Ohio, October 1, 1821, and died at the home of his son in Ashland May 17, 1906 at the age of 84 years, 7 months, and 16 days. He came to Ashland County with his parents when a achild and with them settled in Perrysville, where or near he spent his long life. At the age of 17 he was apprenticed as a carpenter to Christian Welty, which he finished with credit to himself and as a result assisted in the building of may of the substantial homes of the vicinity, continuing at the same trade for may years. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Peterson October 18, 1842, the union being graced by three children, one daughter and two sons, the daughter dying in infancy, the sons John P and James F surviving their parents. He was converted and united with the Greentown Baptist church under the Pastorate of Rev Lockhard and was Deacon for a number of years, and later united with the Vermillion Baptist Church, and with his wife becoming charter members of the body and was also chosen Deacon, serving in that capacity from its organization until his death. Besides the two sons he leaves one sister Samantha Wilkins of Columbus, also 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, besides the many friends to mourn the loss of so good a father and benefactor in the community. Joseph, Frank Sr. - Frank D. Joseph Sr. died unexpectedly Saturday at Lakewood. Survivors include his widow, Elsie O. ; and two sons, Frank D. Jr. and William O., formerly of Ashland. Funeral service was to be held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Zels Funeral Home. Entombment to be in Westwood Abbey Mausoleum, Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted.
