While living there with her parents she became acquainted with Dr. Joel Luther, who was born and raised in Herkimer County, Massachusetts, and was among the first settlers in Uniontown (Ashland) and the first practicing physician in the place. Dr. Luther and Elizabeth Mykrantz were married August 26, 1824, and had three children, tow boys and one girl -- Joel, John Hulbert and Catharine -- the boys both died in the winter of 1832 of Scarlet Fever, and Catharine, the only one that survived, was in after years married to Dr. J.B.F. Sampsel, May 8, 1848, who was also the mother of 3 children -- Joel Vinton (now a practicing physician); Florence, married to Mr. F.C. Semple, Esq.; and one infant, dead. Mrs. Luther was left a widow when about 27 years old (the Doctor having died September 16, 1834) and has remained a widow ever since. At a meeting held at Elder Michael Riddle's by Elder John Rigdon, in the summer of 1835, Mrs. Luther was baptized by Elder Rigdon, in the beautiful little stream known as the Catotawa, and was the first person that the writer ever saw baptized, which made a deep and lasting impression on his mind. She united with the Church of Christ, in Ashland, and lived a pious and exemplary Christian life, dying in the triumphs of a living faith. Few women possessed the energy and business capacity that she possessed; making a wise and proper use of the means left her by her deceased husband. She now rests from all her labors. -- R.
