Gilbert Furniture Store, Ashland, Ohio



The above building that now houses Gilbert Furniture was a hotel named the McNulty House between 1859 and 1890.


February 1873 the McNulty House burned. McNulty who owned the housed died in 1890 after he retired.


George Hemingway took it over and renamed it the Hemingway. It was a rooming house for single men. There was a travelers library and a dime store on the first floor.


George Gilbert was the first salesman and owner of the company. Gilbert's is named for George Gilbert. Gilbert's Furniture Store began business in 1872, using horse and buggy to deliver goods.


George Gilbert began his business at 14 Orange Street and moved to the Main Street location. Originally there was a balcony in the store and in 1913 when the store was remodeled it was removed.



1915 Ashland centennial by William A. Duff - One of the largest furniture establishments in central Ohio is owned by George M. Gilbert and containing five display floors including furniture, stoves, carpets, rugs, linoleums, curtains, draperies, etc. This concern does a large undertaking business and has a chapel in connection with the store. For the convenience of the public it also maintains a ladies rest room. Mr. Gilbert succeeded W. C. Frazee in 1899. The store occupies the entire McNulty House building which Mr. Gilbert remodeled and enlarged.
