Gaylord Miller, President of Home Hardware., Inc, 76 E. Main Street, said today he had purchased the Stahl block on Center Street and hopes to move his store to the new site by early fall.

Home Hardware will occupy space now leased to Cussins & Fearn Co. Inc., at 140 Center St. and the adjacent site formerly occupied by T&A Saveway. The United Department Store, now operating at the old Woolworth store site will continue, he said.

Miller also announced that he has secured a lease on a private parking lot with an estimated 35 parking spaces for customer parking. The lot is between the new Home Hardware site and the Ashland Downtown Theatre. The lease arangement was completed with Mrs. Herman M. Gunn of 104 E. Walnut St.

Purchase of the property was made from Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Stahl of College Ave. owners of Stahl Hardware of 143 W. Main St. They had purchased the Center Street location in June of last year.

Home Hardware presently has 15,284 square feet of floor display space scattered on three flights at its present site on Main Street. When the Center Street store opens, Home Hardware ground level space alone will total 17,400 square feet. In addition there will be 5,200 square feet of lower level sales area at the Cussins and Fearn site. There also is 2,600 square feet of storage under Cussins and Fearn and another 1,920 square feet under the old T&A Saveway store.

Miller says that his plans now call for knocking out the wall between Cussins and Fearn and T&A Saveway site with the exception of the supporting posts. Since there is a slight ground level difference between the floors he will use either a ramp or steps where aisles are planned. This work will start as soon as possible after June 1, Miller said.

Miller said he also plans to tile or carpet the entire floor space at the new site. Carpeting will be used in the gift departments and where television, etc. are dispalyed. Regular hardware will be tiles, he said.

The new store will also have all new fixtures which Miller is purchasing from the Ohio Hardware association.

Miller said while plans are tentative now he expects to have checkout counters at the front and back of the store with a service area also located at the rear of the store adjacent to the city parking lot.

Home Hardware has been at its 76 E. Mian St. site for at least 20 years. Miller started the firm at that time with a partnership with Dave Downie buying him out seven years later.

Miller currently is president and treasurer of the firm and his wife Beulah is vice president.

They reside at 835 Duff Drive and area active in the First Evangelical United Brethren Church.
